Residence permit types in Türkiye: which one fits your situation?

Before you collect a single document, the first question is which type of permit fits your situation. If you get this wrong, no extra document will fix it — the file was built on the wrong basis from the start.

Why everything starts here

The file that gets delayed most is not the one missing a document — it is the one filed under the wrong type. You find that out at the appointment, after you have prepared the papers, taken the slot and paid whatever was due. And at that point it is not fixed by adding a document, because the basis the application was built on was not the right one.

So we always start with one question: what is your situation today? The answer sets the type, and the type sets the papers. The order does not reverse: anyone who starts by collecting “the document list” before knowing their type usually collects the papers of the wrong type — and then has to start collecting all over again.

The difference between the types is not the name. It is two things: who it applies to, and what it asks of them. This page is arranged around exactly those two questions — a table saying who each type applies to, then a list saying what changes in the papers when the type changes.

The most common types

This is not the complete list — it is what people actually ask about.

TypeWho it applies to
Short-term residence (often called “the tourist permit”)The most common route for someone who entered on a regular visa or visa-free and has no other basis (study, work, family). The widest door, which is why many people file under it while holding a better-suited basis they never noticed.
Family residenceFor the spouse or children of someone holding a valid residence permit or Turkish citizenship. The basis here is another person, so their papers and their status enter your file.
Student residenceFor someone with a valid university acceptance. Tied to the length of the study programme.Breaking off your studies touches the basis of the permit itself, not one of its documents.
Long-term residenceFor someone who has completed an uninterrupted period of lawful residence set by the regulations; its conditions are narrower than the others. It is read from the record of your lawful years and how unbroken they are, not from your situation today alone.
Humanitarian residenceParticular cases assessed by the administration. It concerns people for whom no other type is possible.Nothing is planned around it; it is an exception that gets decided, not a route you choose.
Work permitApplied for by the employer, not by the person. A completely separate route. It is not filed through the same door as the types above, and the two should not be mixed up.

What changes in the papers when the type changes

There is a common floor asked for in almost every type, and on top of it each type adds its own:

  • The common floor. A valid passport including the entry stamp page, a recent biometric photo on a white background at 5×6 cm, proof of accommodation, health insurance covering the requested period, and proof that you can support yourself during it.
  • A Turkish mobile number or an email address — in every type. Notifications and the outcome of the application arrive there. An abandoned number means reading the decision after its moment has passed, and that is not accepted as an excuse later.
  • Family residence asks for another person’s papers alongside yours. Proof of the marriage or the relationship, and the status of the person you are connected to: their permit or citizenship, and sometimes their housing and income. Anything missing on their side stops your file.
  • Student residence asks for what the university issues. The acceptance or enrolment document, and what is looked at is that it continues — not that it existed on the day you applied.
  • Long-term residence asks for a record, not a document. What is examined is the history of your lawful residence and how unbroken it is, so an old gap can surface here even if it never surfaced under another type.
  • Humanitarian residence is not prepared from a ready-made list. What is asked for follows the case itself and is decided by the administration, which is why you will not find a published document list for it that fits everyone.

Four questions that decide your type

Answer these for yourself before you ask anyone:

  • How did you enter Türkiye? On a visa, visa-free, or in another status — this sets what is available to you at all, and can rule some types out before you start.
  • Do you have a connected reason? Study, work, marriage, a relative who is resident — each reason has a route that suits it better, and the reason that counts is the one you can prove on paper.
  • What is your current status? A valid permit, an expired one, or nothing — the status changes the route, and a gap gets assessed rather than passed over in silence.
  • How long do you expect to stay? The duration follows the type and its basis; it is not chosen separately. Starting from the duration usually ends in a type that does not apply to you.

Gather these before you ask: which type is yours

This is not an application list, it is a sorting list. It is what your situation is read from, and your type decided, before you collect a single unnecessary document.

You do not need to have all of them right now. What matters is knowing which are there and which are missing, because what is missing is itself information that decides the type.

A common mistake: “I’ll apply short-term and switch later”

A widespread piece of reasoning, and wrong in many cases. Changing type is not always a simple step: it is assessed under the conditions and documents of the new type, not under the one you currently hold, and it can require applying from scratch with a new appointment.

If you have a clear basis (study, family, work), applying under that type from the start is usually shorter, because you prepare the papers of one route instead of the papers of two.

The same mistake has another face: applying under a type whose conditions you do not meet, hoping it will “go through”. A file is not assessed on intention but on what is in it, and what does not hold today will not hold by refiling the same papers. Learning that before the appointment costs less than learning it at the appointment.

What circulates about the types, and what shows up in the files

Most of the wrong information that reaches us about the types comes from groups and posts with no source. These are the most common ones, set against what we actually see.

What the official body and the files say

  • A temporary protection card is not a residence permit, and the time you spend on it is not added to your total years of residence — this is stated by the migration authority.
  • Syrian nationals are exempt from the residence permit fee under reciprocity, and this is published on the migration authority’s site. The residence card charge itself remains due from everyone.
  • The type is read from your situation, not from your preference, and changing it is not a document added to an existing file but an application assessed under the new type.
  • Documents issued in Syria are not legalised with an apostille, because Syria is not a party to the Apostille Convention; the accepted route is a chain of consular certification.

What circulates among people

  • “Temporary protection is a kind of residence, and its years count towards the total.”
  • “Every application means a new official fee, whatever your nationality.”
  • “Pick any type and file, then switch later with an extra document.”
  • “Your Syrian document is fine as long as you put an apostille on it.”

We do not list these to blame anyone: many of them were true at some point, or true for someone else’s case. The harm comes when they are passed on as a general rule and a plan is built on them.

Questions that keep coming up

Can I apply under more than one type at the same time?
No. A file is submitted under a single type and assessed under that type’s conditions alone. Choosing the wrong one means applying again, not adding a second type to the same application.
I am Syrian and hold temporary protection. Do I apply for a residence permit?
Temporary protection status has its own rules, separate from the ordinary residence routes, and the time spent under it is not added to your total years of residence, as stated by the migration authority. Send us the details of your situation and we will tell you what is possible in your case.
Who decides the type in the end?
You choose the type when you apply, and the administration assesses the file on that basis. We help you pick the most suitable type before you pay anything or take an appointment slot.
My situation changed — I got married, or started studying. Does my permit type change automatically?
It does not change by itself. A change in your situation opens the door to another type, but moving to it is an application assessed under that type’s conditions and documents. Timing is what matters: the other type is looked at before your current permit expires, because moving from a valid permit leaves you more options than moving after a gap.
Do the types differ from one city to another?
The types and their conditions are set at national level; what differs in practice is appointment availability and the detail of how things are handled. Registering an address in a city you do not live in, however, shows up in the file and damages it, and it is not repaired later by explaining it in person.
I pick the type according to how long I want to stay. Is that right?
The duration is a result, not a cause: it follows the type and its basis — your studies, the family tie you are connected through, or what the administration decides — and it is not requested separately. Anyone who starts from the duration usually ends up under a type whose conditions their situation does not meet, and loses the whole arrangement and starts it over.
